Music is powerful.
My favorite part of DJing is witnessing the power of music. I can’t quite put it into words (anyone who says they can is bluffing). Music is an intersection by which cultures, age groups, creeds, and souls of all kind can come together and create memories. Sometimes, we cry together through music. Other times, we celebrate. It’s a mission of freedom that we embark on together.
That’s what’s on my mind with each performance. Remembering why we are here together and using music to empower that conversation.
Delaware County Community College has been one of my favorite places to perform. We started connecting last spring and each event has been invigorating and inspiring. There’s something electric about these kids and their stories. It’s really dope hearing all that they’ve accomplished and overcome just to get to that very moment. A reminder of how determined our next generation truly is.
Back for a Third Event with DCCC
DCCC invited me back to DJ their Afro-themed Party for the Black Student Union. I usually do their spring events. The chill smacked my face as I walked on campus, quickly reminding me that it is not May. I arrived early (short 2-hour drive) and my inquisitive nature got the best of me. I had never actually toured the campus. That had to change, right?
I found myself in the Academic hall, looking at all the upcoming events in the community. The basketball team’s schedule looked heavy. There was a student hosting a juried exhibit soon. The school is hosting a clothing drive (it’s so humbling – they’re accepting donations to their closet, where students can come in and take any clothes that they need – wow). The security guards were nice. They were engaged and alert, yet approachable. They liked their job. Students were studying everywhere, it seemed. Exams were just a few days away (so I heard). You know I could go on about my little (chilly) tour. It was refreshing to see it all and be reminded of the bright minds that are steering our futures.
Showtime in Media, PA
Seven o’clock hit and it was time to ‘press play’. It was an afro-beats/Caribbean-themed event. Arguably my favorite genre of music. The students did a great job of decorating the mid-size cafeteria. Little flags were on every table to represent some of the cultures that made up the Black Student Union. A huge balloon display greeted guests as they entered. It was fun. Beyond the music, I was impressed with how the students managed the problems that popped up here and there (you know how events can be). It was a blend of their requests and my selections. Just how I like it. They danced (wait, I danced too). We partied. They ate. They connected with each other.
Knowing the pressure these students were under (going into finals week), I was happy to see them be able to let loose and find some peace in the storm.
DCCC Black Student Union, thank you so much for having me at your event. I hope that you enjoyed yourselves. Remain focused on the goal ahead of you and clear the obstacles as they come. Hearing your stories, talking to you about your visions; it’s all possible and you will finish strong. Just have to keep going! In fact, you just have to keep dancing. Also, thank you to Simone Richardson and staff for trusting me with the job.
Until next time,
Brian
P.S – I know, I need to start taking pictures and videos at these events. I’ll do better.
